Rachele Kanigel is an associate professor of journalism at San Francisco State University and author of
The Student Newspaper Survival Guide. She is also executive director of the Institute for Education in International Media (ieiMedia), which sponsors summer multimedia study-abroad programs for English-speaking college students and recent graduates.
She is on the board of College Media Advisers and is a founding member of the California College Media Association.
She was a daily newspaper reporter for 15 years, writing mostly about health and medicine for The Oakland Tribune, The News and Observer of Raleigh, NC, and the Contra Costa Times. As a freelance writer, she has written for numerous magazines and Web sites, including Time, U.S. News and World Report, Health, People, Reader's Digest, Natural Health, CNN.com and MSNBC.com.
She holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from San Francisco State University and a master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.
In 2006 she was named Journalism Educator of the Year Award (four-year division) by the California Journalism Education Coalition.
